Interesting Facts About Hawaii



This blog is full of completely random facts about Hawaii!

About a million and a half people live on Hawaii. The capital is Honolulu.

Hawaiians have the longest lifespans of any of the US states.

There are 8 main islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and the Big Island of Hawaii. There are 137 islands in all. Total land area is 28,311 km² .

The word Hawaii comes from “hawaiki”, which means Place of the Gods or Homeland in Polynesian.

Ten of the world's 14 climate zones can be found on Hawaii.

The Hawaiian islands were formed by volcanos. Each island has at least one primary volcano, but some islands have several.

Because of Kilauea, which has been erupting for about 30 years, the Big Island grows more than 42 acres larger each year. Kilauea is the world's most active volcano. During 4 months of 2018, Kilauea was so active that it added 875 acres to the coastline.

Every year, tourists take volcanic rocks from Kilauea and then send them back, claiming that the rocks gave them bad luck from Pele. Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of volcanos, fire, lightning, and violence.  Should we risk Pele's wrath to add to our rock collection???

Hawaii is the most geographically isolated chain of islands in the world.

The 2 official languages are English and Hawaiian.  Wiki” (as in Wikipedia) is a Hawaiian word which means “quick”.


The island of Niihau is called the “Forbidden Island”. It was called this because of a polio outbreak in 1952. Now it is a critical habitat for highly endangered species and non-native Hawaiians are restricted from going there. It is the only island where Hawaiian remains the primary language. It has no paved roads.

Another island, the island of Molokai, still houses a leper colony. Over 8000 people (most native Hawaiian) were forcibly relocated here for more than a century, beginning in the 1860s. Even though the quarantine was lifted in 1969, several residents still live there. Leprosy is now called Hansen's disease. Hansen was the doctor who identified the bacteria that causes leprosy, which is now easily treated with antibiotics. A vaccine is in the process of being developed.



The island of Molokai has no traffic lights.

The Hawaiian hoary bat and monk seal are the only native mammals. All other animals were brought to the islands by humans.

Hawaii has lost more wildlife species than any other state.

It is considered rude to refuse a lei that is offered to you, or to remove it in the presence of the person who gave it to you. Also, never wear a lei that you intend to give to someone else.



You are only considered to be Hawaiian if you have ancestry in the islands. Even if you live there permanently, you are not considered Hawaiian but are known as a local.

Hawaii is the first state to fully ban plastic bags.

Hawaii locations have been used in movies such as Jurassic Park, Avatar, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and 50 First Dates; and TV series including Lost, Magnum PI, and Hawaii 5-0. In reality, there is no statewide police service (Hawaii 5-0) because each county has its own police.

Local police received numerous calls about a plane crash on the beach in 2004. In reality, it was Oceanic Flight 815 – the wreckage for the TV show Lost.



Snakes are outlawed in Hawaii and can only be found in zoos.

Billboards are banned.


It is illegal to remove any sand from Hawaii's beaches, with a fine of up to $100,000. This took effect in 2013. Before that, it was legal to remove up to one gallon (almost 4 litres) of sand per person per day.


Hawaii has its own time zone called Hawaiian Standard Time, and does not have daylight savings time.

Hawaii is the only US state to have had its own monarch, which they still celebrate every year.

Casinos and gambling are not allowed (thus the fact that our ship has no casino), and there are no lotteries.




Everyone who lives in Hawaii is a minority, because there is no majority ethnicity.

All beaches in Hawaii are public, despite what some of the hotels would lead you to believe.

Two of the world's largest telescopes are found on Mauna Kea on the Big Island.
Famous people who were born in Hawaii: former US president Barack Obama; singers Bette Midler and Bruno Mars; and actors Nicole Kidman and Jason Momoa (Aquaman).


Surfing is the official state sport. Professional surfers ride waves of over 50 feet.


The Hawaiian word “Aloha” means both hello and goodbye.
