Toronto to Honolulu

Saturday, February 8, 2020

Did you know there is a direct flight between Toronto and Honolulu?  Well, neither did our travel agent, who wanted us to take flights that included TWO stopovers and 10 hours of sitting in airports.  We said no, thank you, and found our own direct flight.  Yes, it was alot more expensive to fly direct, but some things are worth it!

The flight was supposed to leave at 9:40 am.   But the bridge/ramp was broken, so we had to change gates and wait and wait and wait.  By the time we got on, we were 2 hours late in taking off.

Fun Fact:  The 777 Dreamliner does not have pull down shades at the windows.  Instead, there is a 5 setting dimmer switch.  It took us the entire 10 hour flight to figure out that the overhead light "switch" is located on our screens.

We arrived in Honolulu over 2 hours late and were a bit worried about missing our ship.  Then the plane sat on the tarmac forever because there was another plane at the gate.  Argh!

Things got better once we got off the plane (at 4 pm local, 5 hour time difference).  We got our luggage and found the taxi right away that we had pre-booked, thank goodness. The airport is only a 15 minute drive from the cruise ship dock.

The nice thing about arriving late is that we had NO lineup to check in for the cruise!  They even greeted us with leis and seashell necklaces.

We had a Meet and Mingle with other Cruise Critic folks, who took this nice photo of us:

Then we took care of stuff like getting our specialty restaurants booked, confirming gluten free meals for Frankie, and getting the ship internet to work!

We missed the muster drill and they want us to do it tomorrow but we have an excursion booked.  Oops!

Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America is the only ship in the world that is allowed to sail between U.S. ports!  This is because in 1886 the Passenger Vessel Services Act was signed into law, stating that only ships owned by US companies, built in the US, and staffed with a US crew can go directly from one US port to another.

We picked this ship because we really didn't want to spend days at sea just getting to Hawaii!

This is the first time we've picked a cabin facing directly out the back of the ship, on deck 7, right above the dining room.  It has a great balcony!  Large enough for 2 comfy lounge chairs!

So this is our itinerary for the next week:
