Banff and a Drive

We got up this morning and walked next door to where our car rental was.  We have a very nice car, a Chevy Cruz, with only 1000 kms on it.

Boy, was Anton glad that Frankie made him pack his roll-up packable jacket!

We were scheduled to drive to Medicine Hat today, but all the roads were closed this morning.  Yesterday there were so many accidents (especially with tractor trailers) that some cars (and buses full of tourists) were stuck on the highway for 12 hours.  So we decided to hold off a bit on our drive.

What to do in Banff for a half day?  We had already done the Sulphur Mountain Gondola, and at $64 each, we decided to go somewhere new.

We walked along Banff Ave and had fun checking out the tourist shops (featured in this year's Amazing Race Canada!).

These were today's aminal sightings:

The snow was pretty deep and the roads were pretty icy.

Frankie treated herself to a pretty cool pair of boots:

Rocky went to visit some cousins:

We ran across our Texan friends Lannie and Barbara and showed them how to make a snowman.

The 4 of us had lunch at Boston Pizza, then said goodbye as we decided we could chance the roads.

The Rockies are so beautiful covered in snow.

The drive to Calgary was a bit dicey and we lost count of the cars in the ditch.  And a few transports.  Dead Man's Pass was aptly named.

We arrived safely in Medicine Hat at 7 pm and Anton's sister Hildy fed us a wonderful borscht.
