Zell Am See

Thursday, August 22, 2013

This morning our hotel gave us a shuttle ride (nice!) to the base of the Schmittenhoehe Mountain. This mountain is 1965 meters high (6500 feet). We caught a cable car up, smushed in with 30 other people. At the top, it wasn't as well laid out as Pilatus was in Switzerland, but the trails were nicer. You could hike back down to Zell Am See in 3 hours if you wanted, but we liked the views from the top, so we hiked along the top for an hour until we reached a restaurant and stopped for lunch.

After lunch we took the "Panoramic" trail back to where we started. Along this whole trail there are surprise wooden sculptures along the way, about 30 in total. They were about 3 feet tall and mostly different animals. This is their idea of an open-air exhibition.

We stopped and took some self-portraits, and it wasn't until we looked at the pictures later that we noticed that Anton had a bee perched on his head the whole time!

We got back to the main station and sat and watched the parasailers take off, wishing we could be one of them.

We called and got the shuttle back to the hotel, and walked over to the Grand Hotel for our free massages. They were nice and relaxing, but Anton had to take a bath afterwards to get the smelly slimy oils off of him (Frankie had asked for non-scented).

We wanted to go for a motorized boat ride on the lake, they were renting boats for 10 euros for half an hour. But they were calling number 65 and the guy ahead of us had number 78, so we gave that idea up and went for another paddle boat ride on the lake.

Dinner at the hotel was another 5 course deal, all included with the hotel. This time there was a different piano player entertaining us. Completely different style from the piano player last night.

After dinner we walked down along the lake to Elisabethpark, where we sat at the water's edge for a premium seat to the laser show. It was okay that we were there early because there was a concert band playing. They played a lot of pieces that Frankie's senior band might play. After the concert around 9:30 pm, there was a laser, water, and light show on the water, set to rock music. Sometimes they made screens with the water and showed videos. Very cool. It lasted 20 minutes.

Right after the laser show finished, the full moon put on a show of its own, rising from behind the mountain across the lake.
