The
Hawaiian islands were formed by volcanos. Each island has at least
one primary volcano, but some islands have several.
Because
of Kilauea, which has been erupting for about 30 years, the Big
Island grows more than 42 acres larger each year. Kilauea is the
world's most active volcano. During 4 months of
2018, Kilauea was so active that it added 875 acres to the coastline.
Every
year, tourists take volcanic rocks from Kilauea and then send them back, claiming that the rocks gave them bad
luck from Pele. Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of volcanos, fire,
lightning, and violence. Should we risk Pele's wrath to add to our rock collection???

The
island of Niihau is called the “Forbidden Island”. It was called
this because of a polio outbreak in 1952. Now it is a critical
habitat for highly
endangered species and non-native Hawaiians are restricted from going
there. It is the only island where Hawaiian remains the primary
language. It has no paved roads.
Another island, the
island of Molokai, still houses a leper colony. Over 8000 people
(most native Hawaiian) were forcibly relocated here for more than a
century, beginning in the 1860s. Even though the quarantine was
lifted in 1969, several residents still live there. Leprosy is now
called Hansen's disease. Hansen was the doctor who identified the
bacteria that causes leprosy, which is now easily treated with
antibiotics. A vaccine is in the process of being developed.
The
island of Molokai has no traffic lights.
The
Hawaiian hoary bat and monk seal are the only native mammals. All other animals
were brought to the islands by humans.
Hawaii

It
is considered rude to refuse a lei that is offered to you, or to
remove it in the presence of the person who gave it to you. Also,
never wear a lei that you intend to give to someone else.
You
are only considered to be Hawaiian if you have ancestry in the
islands. Even if you live there permanently, you are not considered
Hawaiian but are known as a local.
